Learn How poor paraphrasing could lead to plagiarism

paraphrasing

It is difficult to find a general rule to determine when something is a paraphrase and not a quotation. Umberto Eco gives three examples: (a) A meaningful paraphrase; (b), A false, plagiarizing paraphrase; and (c); An unsuccessful but not plagiarizing paragraphphrase.

Original:

Even greater anticipation was expressed for the appearance of Antichrist The Antichrist was the fearful demon that would reign over the world. His rule would bring lawlessness, chaos, robbery, theft, torture, mass murder, and he would also be the Herald for the long-awaited fulfillment of Christ’s return and the kingdoms of the saints. People looked for signs that would accompany the end of the “time of tribulation”, according to prophetic tradition. These “signs” included poor rulers, drought, epidemics, comets and sudden deaths of well-known men.

(a) A useful

Cohn is very thorough in this regard. It shows the tension of that time when the Antichrist was anticipated, fueled by fear and disorder. Even though the time was filled with sad events like looting, robbery and privation, the people did not lack in signs that corresponded to the many prophetic descriptions of the Antichrist’s coming.

(b) A false, plagiarizing paraphrase:

Cohn follows [..] a series views that the author has advanced elsewhere. It is important to remember, however, that the Antichrist’s advent created even greater tensions. Generations lived in constant fear of the devil, whose rule would actually be lawless chaos. This would include a period of robbery, pillage and torture as well as mass murder. It was also the prelude or the Second Coming of the Saints. People were always looking for signs that indicated the end of “time of disorder” and were, according to prophets, to be accompanied by these signs. This included bad governments, civil warfare, war, droughts, epidemics or comets, as well sudden deaths of important men (in addition a greater level of sinfulness).

(c) A plagiarizing attempt that fails

Cohn reminds us, however, that we were looking forward to the “antichrist’s appearance with even greater tension.” Generations lived in anticipation for the evil demon, “under whose control legal chaos, robbery & pillage and torture would reign, while at same time he was a herald of long-awaited fulfillment and the return of Christ, and the kingdom of all the saints.” People were always vigilant for signs that would indicate and accompany the end of “times tribulation”, according to the prophets. Cohn said that the signs were bad rulers as well as drought, flooding, epidemics, comets, sudden deaths of high-ranking men, and more generally, rampant sin. It was not difficult to locate them.
