Why Is it Difficult to Get into IITs?

Get into IITs

Students who wish to get admission in IITs must have passed the IIT-JEE with a good rank. IIT-JEE is the dream exam for almost all engineering aspirants in India to give the perfect shape to their future and get a quality engineering education. However, IIT JEE is more complex than other entrance examinations, so students cannot pass without proper preparation strategy, study and skillset. Every year, lakhs of students apply for this exam, and only 1% of them reach their destination, i.e., getting into IIT. One of the main reasons for this low success rate is that the question paper’s difficulty level is higher.

And the competition level is greater than the difficulty level of the paper.

There are multiple reasons why IIT JEE is the most challenging test and is included among the top 10 most difficult exams in India. JEE Main and JEE Advanced’s question paper format is also vast, with all the sections (three subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) having lengthy and tricky questions. Students must cross two phases of JEE – JEE Main and JEE Advanced – with good rank to get a seat in IITs. Suppose candidates who can be in the top 2.5 lakhs in the JEE Main 2023 will be eligible to apply for the JEE Advanced subject to the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria 2023. Candidates who clear JEE Advanced will be eligible for a seat in IITs. Getting a good rank in JEE Advanced is difficult since the competition is high and the number of seats in IITs is limited.

The JEE Advanced question paper is conceptual-based, designed by IITs to test students’ understanding, reasoning, logical and analytical skills. Questions asked in the JEE Advanced paper are application based and require in-depth knowledge and applications of concepts. Students who learned the concepts for the board exam will find it quite challenging to solve JEE Advanced questions. They should focus on applying these concepts and interlink them to identify the logic of solving tricky questions.

In a board exam, students can even earn partial marks depending on how much they have written, even if they cannot complete the solution and get the final answer. In contrast, in the JEE Advanced, if students attempt the question, they can earn marks if it is correct or lose marks if it is incorrect or, at best, can ignore a question unanswered (if not confident) to avoid negative marks. Since negative marks can also impact students’ rank, they may not be able to beat the JEE Advanced cutoff. Thus, solving the questions and choosing the correct answer is challenging in the JEE Advanced paper.

A candidate who couldn’t get the minimum cutoff marks in JEE Advanced will not be considered for choosing IITs. Thus, cracking JEE Advanced is mandatory to get admission to IITs. However, students can join IITs without JEE but not for B.Tech. That means students can join courses in IITs other than B.Tech without JEE scores, but there will be some prescribed eligibility criteria for each of those courses. If a student dreams of joining IITs for B.Tech, they must crack JEE Advanced with a good rank, which can be achieved with an effective preparation strategy.
